Created as a direct response to a culmination of frustration by the independent design community towards having designs being directly reproduced without sharing credits or profits, Colony’s latest exhibition showcases new designs inspired by works from the past. In a move that underscores the ethics behind drawing inspiration, the presentation includes a collaborative piece by Studio Paolo Ferrari and Hiroko Takeda, and a new credenza by Grain. Starting this year, Pijoulat and Hainaut served as ICFF + WantedDesign brand directors, overseeing programming for both entities, which were located under one roof at the Javits Centre, as has been for the past two years. A short stroll from the Javits Center, the Ritz Carlton Nomad’s recently opened Zaytinya will provide with Mediterranean fare in abundance—enough to sustain an afternoon of touring downtown storefronts. Revelie Luncheonette is a new offshoot of beloved brasserie Raoul’s, perfect for those visiting SoHo. Swan Room and Le Dive in micro-neighborhood Dimes Square have become local favorites and will serve as good venues for end-of-day libations. Milanese-inspired Saraghina Caffè in Fort Greene and Bar Americano in Greenpoint are musts. The show is co-curated by Lora Appleton of Female Design Council, and Andrea Hill of furniture studio Tortuga Forma. However, there are a few clusters where visitors can see many things at once, such as design districts in Soho and around the New York Design Center in Manhattan, as well as Brooklyn Navy Yard and Industry City in Brooklyn.

Glass artist Amber Cowan’s fantastical and surreal sculpture Visions of the Night Muse in Jade, at Heller Gallery’s Salon booth, featured what looked (to me) like dozens of little button mushrooms bursting through an overgrowth of flowers. Maison Intègre, the Burkina Faso-based metalsmithing workshop and foundry, has teamed up with designer Noé Duchafour Lawrance on a series of bronze and brass works. Maison Integre’s founder Amber Jarno invited Duchafour Lawrance to spend extensive periods of time with the studio’s artisans and community, resulting in a collection of work that reinterprets and translates forms often seen sculpted in wood or clay, this time realised in metal.
As New York City prepares to roll out its annual home design event starting in May, we share a plenitude of bright spots to look out for this year. The sculpture itself nods to another sun-inspired creation, the whimsical “Solar Do-Nothing” machine created by famed furniture maker Eames in 1957. The Brooklyn-based design studio Bower’s expertise with mirrors reaches a new height with a five-strong collection of mirrors designed by Ana Kraš that riff on the artist/designer’s figurative drawings. Referencing Kraš’ expressive use of line, color, and texture, the tag team transformed these elements into compositions of shapes that are harmoniously arranged around the mirror’s edge to forming a deconstructed frame. The hand-drawn lines materialized into dimensional metal components that clip onto the outer edges of the glass to playfully mimic the contrast of crayon on paper.

A couple of feet away from Liam Lee’s chairs at Salon was Julian Watts’s Tree, a sculpture the Oregon-based woodworker made from twigs he found around his studio. Tree is composed of hand-carved and chiseled knobs, paddles, and tubes made from maple, walnut, oak, redwood, ash, pine, and fir that protrude from an eight-foot-tall bleached totem. (It sort of reminded me of Bruce Lee’s wooden dummy.) Some featured dimpled surfaces, others were polished smooth; they protruded from the central column like fungi on a log. During the pandemic, he began to read poetry from the 13th-century Buddhist Shiwu, which changed how he engaged with his five-acre plot of forested land where he foraged for wood.
